Stories about Nepal

In Nepal, CLARISSA has worked with children and businesses in five locations in Kathmandu where there is a high concentration of children working in the worst forms of child labour in the Adult Entertainment Sector (AES).

These include a tourist hub, an established area for entertainment, a newer/emergent commercial centre and two transportation hubs for international and domestic travel. The commercial sale of sex (or some form of sexual activity) and the sexual exploitation of children is known to take place within some of the dance bars, spa/massage parlours, dohoris (folk-dance bars) and khaja ghars (small-scale snack shops) within these locations.

In the stories about children’s days, you can accompany children as they go to work and learn what it feels like to negotiate an adult world, often after dark. In stories about the businesses, you can go inside a dance bar, a dohori, a khajar ghar and a spa / massage parlour where children work to learn about the business models and the day-to-day pressures of running a profitable enterprise. In stories about neighbourhoods, you can experience the streets of Kathmandu, as children do, paying attention to how things look and feel at different times of the day. In stories about children’s lives, you can explore children’s pathways into the AES as well as other types of labour including street vending, begging and work in the transport sector.
